Resort Areas
There are many resorts in Nevada. They are spread along near Las Vegas and Reno. One of the biggest resorts in Nevada is Henderson and Summer Lin. Another big hotel in Las Vegas is the MGM Grand. Luxury hotels are on The Strip. They have casinos and many shows to choose from for entertainment.

Tourism
Nevada's economy is overwhelmingly based on tourism, especially gambling in the casinos. In Las Vegas and Reno, there are many casinos which attracts many tourists. More than 50 percent of the tax dollars collected by the Nevada government come from services related to the tourism industry.

Nevada is number 1 in gold mining. It is the 2nd biggest mining industry in silver ore. In 1859, prospectors were searching for gold on Mount David and discovered a rich deposit of silver ore. Mining can be dangerous. Some miners get rich, while others get killed by falling rocks while trying to find gold.

Casinos are a big hit in Nevada. In Nevada you need to be at least 21 years old to start gambling and going to casinos. They were the first state to legalize gambling. Many different hotels and casinos attract tourists to Las Vegas and Reno.

Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam, originally called the Boulder Dam, is 30 miles southeast from Las Vegas. When it was completed in 1936 it was the biggest dam in the world. The Hoover dam was a very big help to Nevada's economy. They started to build this dam in 1931. That's right, it took 5 years to build the hoover Dam!
